OpenRouter BYOK in Greta

Document Type: Official Status: Active Last Updated: 05/01/26

Overview

This document provides an official explanation of OpenRouter and its integration with Greta, including what OpenRouter is, how to connect it, how it works, and how billing and credits behave when OpenRouter is enabled or disabled.

This documentation is intended for all Greta users, including Enterprise and Non-Enterprise customers.

What Is OpenRouter

OpenRouter is a unified AI routing platform that allows access to multiple Large Language Models (LLMs) through a single API key.

Instead of integrating individual AI providers separately, Greta integrates with OpenRouter as a single gateway for all AI model requests.

OpenRouter BYOK (Bring Your Own Key)

OpenRouter BYOK allows users to connect their own OpenRouter API key to Greta.

When BYOK is enabled:

  • Greta uses OpenRouter to make all AI API calls

  • AI usage is billed directly on the user’s OpenRouter account

  • Greta credits are not used

Availability & Eligibility

Enterprise Users

  • OpenRouter BYOK is available for free

  • No additional purchase is required

  • Users can directly connect their OpenRouter API key

Non-Enterprise Users

  • OpenRouter BYOK must be enabled by purchasing an add-on

  • A $5 OpenRouter add-on is deducted every month to keep OpenRouter (BYOK) active.

  • In addition to the monthly deduction, a minimum Greta credit balance is required for API calls to work. This fee only enables the integration

  • Model usage costs are handled separately by OpenRouter

How OpenRouter Works in Greta

Greta determines whether to use OpenRouter or Greta credits based on the “Always use this key” setting in the Integrations section.

“Always use this key” — ON

When Always use this key is turned ON:

  • OpenRouter is always used for all AI API calls

  • Greta routes every request through the connected OpenRouter API key

  • Greta credits are never consumed

  • Billing happens entirely on the user’s OpenRouter account

This mode ensures full BYOK behavior with no fallback to Greta credits.

“Always use this key” — OFF

When Always use this key is turned OFF:

  • OpenRouter is used only when it is explicitly enabled

  • If OpenRouter is disabled or disconnected, Greta automatically falls back to its default AI setup

  • Greta credits are consumed when fallback occurs

In simple terms:

OpenRouter is used only when the key is enabled. If it’s not enabled, Greta falls back to its own credits.

Model Usage & Billing

  • Greta does not charge per token or per request when BYOK is active

  • OpenRouter handles all usage-based billing

  • Users have full visibility and control over spend via OpenRouter

Managing OpenRouter Connection

  • OpenRouter can be disconnected at any time from the Integrations tab

  • Users can re-enable it later using the same steps

  • Switching OpenRouter off will revert usage back to Greta’s default billing and credits

Working on Projects with OpenRouter

After enabling OpenRouter BYOK:

  • Users can open any existing or new project

  • Continue building without changing workflows

  • No credits will be deducted for AI usage

  • Everything runs using the connected OpenRouter API key

Summary

OpenRouter integration in Greta provides flexible and predictable behavior:

  • OpenRouter is used only when the API key is enabled

  • With Always use this key ON, OpenRouter is always used and Greta credits are never consumed

  • With Always use this key OFF, Greta automatically falls back to its own AI and credits

  • Billing is handled either by OpenRouter or Greta based on the active configuration

This ensures reliability, cost control, and seamless fallback for all users.
